We are a country of different races, religions, ancestries, cultures, and traditions. And while this diversity is what makes our country unique, it's also a driver behind hate crimes. A hate crime is a crime committed against victims due to their actual or perceived race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, gender or sexual orientation. Hate crimes violate the very basic tenants of our democracy because they target the right of every resident to live safely and freely.
The San Diego Hate Crimes Coalition is a group of over 40 law enforcement agencies and diverse community-based organizations established in 1997 to fight the issue of hate crimes. As part of that effort, the coalition commissioned us to develop a program that encouraged hate crime victims to report hate crimes and communicated to all San Diegans that our entire community must stand united against racial hatred and hate crimes. This campaign was designed to address the issue and mobilize the community.
